By CHATULA KANGALI –

A LOCAL company is set to put up a fish cannery in Mpulungu District, Northern Province, to boost the export of fish to the Great Lakes region.
Pendulam Zambia Limited has since acquired land from the local authority for the construction of a fish cannery in the district.
Mpulungu District Commissioner Dennis Sikazwe confirmed in an interview that the construction of the fish processing plant would help the district boost fish exports.
He said the construction of the fish cannery, once completed, would change the economic status of the district through job creation.
“Pendulam Zambia Limited has already acquired land for the construction of a fish cannery and the facility will help boost the export of fish,” he said.
Mr Sikazwe said more than 1,000 people were expected to be employed and that the fish processing company would be the first value-addition fish company in the rural district.
He further said that fish farmers, who were recently empowered by the Government through the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission, would start fish production next month.
Mr Sikazwe said more than 20 farmers who had developed fish ponds around Lake Tanganyika were expected to receive fingerings for stocking next month.
He said about 25 ponds were developed around the lake and the plateau to conserve fish in the area.
