Mopani Copper MineBy MOFFAT CHAZINGWA –

ALL the 13 Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) workers who were choked and rushed to hospital following a fire incident at the Mindolo sub-vertical in Kitwe are out of danger and have been discharged from hospital.
The miners were rushed to Wusakile Mine Hospital on Friday after a power sub-station at the 4180-meter level caught fire, causing the people who were operating around the area to get choked.
MCM public relations manager Nebert Mulenga said the 13 miners affected by the fire were all safe and had been discharged from Wusakile Mine Hospital on Saturday.
Mr Mulenga said in a statement yesterday that only one miner was kept for observation at the hospital, but was equally scheduled to be discharged.
“Mopani Copper Mines Plc wishes to confirm a fire incident, which occurred on Friday at Mindolo SV in Kitwe.
“The fire was reported at approximately 14:24 hours at 4180-meter level. We immediately activated our emergency response plan and mobilised our trained Emergency Response Team to respond to the incident.
“No serious injuries were reported and all employees were successfully evacuated to the surface and accounted for. A total of 13 miners had been checked and cleared,” Mr Mulenga said.
He said the cause of the fire had not yet been established, but that MCM was currently working closely with all relevant authorities to establish the cause and the extent of the damage.
