KATONGO –
THE HUMAN Rights Commission (HRC) has commended opposition political parties for their commitment to conduct peaceful campaigns for the August tri-partite elections.
The opposition political parties which include the United Party for National Development (UPND), Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), Alliance for Democracy and Development, Rainbow,  Green party, people’s Democratic Party and the National Democratic party held a meeting and resolved to hold peaceful campaigns ahead of this year’s general elections.
HRC chief information, education and training officer Mweelwa Muleya said the move by the opposition political parties to carry out their campaigns peacefully was welcome and should be supported by all stakeholders.
Mr Muleya said it was important for parties to follow what they committed themselves to.
He said the Commission would continue to monitor and ensure that all political parties including the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) maintained peace and unity during the elections.
Mr Muleya said the commission was also working with the Zambia Police to ensure the public order Act (POA) was applied fairly.
He said the ruling party should also embrace and set a tone for peaceful campaigns as it was the only way to avoid apathy.
