INCLUSIVE education is concerned with removing all barriers to learning with the participation of all learners vulnerable to exclusion and marginalisation. It is a strategic approach designed to facilitate learning success for all children. This is the way that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural, Organisation (UNESCO)’s Section for Special Needs Education (UNESCO, 2000) defines inclusive education. Zambia has made great strides to provide an all-inclusive learning environment, which allows equal access in all geographical locations. Access to education, in rural areas has been a challenge, ranging from distances covered to having adequate resources for children to continue their education. This is the more reason, Chief Mumena of the Kaonde people of North-Western Province, should be applauded for starting the Mumena Education Foundation (MEF). The MEF focuses on raising resources to offer scholarships to under-privileged children drawn from rural areas across the country. One can imagine the number of children in the country’s rural settings, that will greatly benefit from this initiative once it has reached its peak. In its infancy, Chief Mumena, stated during the launch in Solwezi yesterday that the programme will first be rolled out in the North-Western Province, but the ultimate goal, will be to reach other parts of the country. The MEF, which was launched in Solwezi last Friday, at which about K111,000 was raised, has been driven into securing finances that will help the under-privileged get access to schools and higher learning institutions across the country, because of the hardships rural children faced in pursuing their education careers. Various hardships inhibit, children in rural areas, from attaining their desired levels of education, this is not usually the case for their contemporaries in the urban dwellings, but this does not mean to state that educational hurdles do not exist in urban areas. Chief Mumena underscored that the MEF is born from knowledge of the hardships facing access to education in rural settings. Infrastructure in the education sector, like in other key economic sectors, is quickly taking a sharp change, hence rendering support to children, to join fellow pupils in schools, is a noble action. The MEF will not only cater for primary education, it targets all levels of education. The prime objective is to ensure that children who cannot continue with their education on account of lack of resources, are helped and it shall be worked towards assisting all those eligible to be assisted. This is the belief that has driven Chief Mumena to take this bold step and contribute to the country. He indicated how glad he is in this undertaking and that, despite going into it in his late years, he wants this programme to continue, even when he is ‘gone’. In his words, he says, “it is heart-breaking to see children with good results, but cannot proceed to secondary schools or colleges and universities, because of financial difficulties.” This venture, also shows how instrumental traditional leaders are to the country, they can with their immerse potential, contribute positively to make a change for the good of society, particularly for the good of the children who desire to be in school. This opportunity, comes at a time, when issues of early marriages, pupil drop-out rates are skyrocketing but with such a platform, things will change for the better, in the years to come. To other traditional leaders, across the country, Chief Mumena’s initiative is food-for-thought. It is important to position oneself, in a manner that the country, the children that you render assistance and shape their future, will always remember you and thank you for what you did for them. Bravo-Chief Mumena and good luck!
