By SANDRA MWILA –
MAZABUKA Golf Club is pondering on expanding its course to 18 holes from the current nine.
Club captain Henry Mambwe said during the Captain’s Trophy tournament that the club was in talks with prominent farmer Constain Chilala to sell part of his land to enable the course expansion.
Mambwe said their ambition is to have a standard golf course to enable them host international tournaments such as the Zambia Sugar Open that is being sponsored by Zambia Sugar at the Lusaka Golf Club.
He said it would be a huge achievement for the club to host Zambia Sugar Open.
“We are planning on expanding the golf course from nine holes to 18 holes. I am already in talks with Chilala to give us some land.
“We also have to talk to Zambia Sugar to increase sponsorship in maintaining the course,” he said.
Mambwe said Zambia Sugar gives them about K750,000 annually for maintenance of the course.
He said the Mazabuka Golf Club signed a 10-year maintenance deal in 2008 with Zambia Sugar for the maintainance of the course.
“It would be our pride and joy to host the Zambia Sugar Open, it’s not an immediate plan but we are working on it.
“With the support of Zambia Sugar, we shall achieve it. Currently they sponsor the maintenance of the course at a cost of about K750,000,” he said.
