GOVERNMENT has assured National Housing Authority (NHA) of its support to revamp the institution which is now in a desperate situation.
The NHA is facing deep financial challenges after being hit with failure to sell houses due to hiked prices, which consequently resulted in three months salary arrears for its workers.
And State House Special Assistant for Project Implementation and Planning Lucky Mulusa has said Government is aware of the problems the institution is facing and is ready to render assistance.
Mr Mulusa said the past governments did not seem to understand the importance of the NHA, hence the need to revisit the initial purpose of the institution.
He said this after touring NHA houses at the corner of Great North and Kasangula roads.
Mr Mulusa said it was Government’s desire to see that the institution reached its full potential.
“We want to work with you as Government so that you are able to provide the products that are expected of you and have your salaries updated,” he said.
Mr Mulusa was also impressed with the initiative of making paving bricks, blocks and paving stones as one way of sustaining the institution.
NHA acting chief executive director Waicha Ndhlovu appealed to the Government to assist in paying the three months salary arrears owed to the workers.
Ms Ndhlovu called on the Government to continue providing grants to the institution for operational expenses as provided for in the NHA Act.
