A SUSPECTED livestock disease has broken out in Lufwanyama District on the Copperbelt and over 18 cattle have since died in the area.
According to the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU)website, suspected dematophylosis, locally known as ‘senkobo’ has been recorded  in Lyamaoma farming area under Chief Fungulwe of the Lamba speaking people.
Dematophylosis is a ringworm mostly caused by fungi and affects the skin of cattle, goats, sheep and other domestic animals.
ZNFU stated that the disease was identified by local veterinary officers in the area and that about 18 cattle have been reported to have died in the last few weeks.
Cattle owners in the district have called on Government   to intervene in the matter before the disease spreads to other parts of the district.
“We are seeking Government’s intervention by ensuring that experts are quickly sent into the affected area to ascertain the situation,” said the cattle owners.
