Thieves rob Cavmont Bank of K2m

PoliceTHIEVES have stolen more than K2 million cash from Cavmont Bank Chipata branch in Eastern Province.
The thieves, who also went away with US$ 6,100 and 2,325 British pounds, are believed to have broken into the bank between midnight and 06:00 hours yesterday.
They blew up the vault and stole K2, 218,363.45.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Alex Chilufya confirmed the robbery yesterday.
Mr Chilufya said the bank manager reported the robbery yesterday around 10:00 hours at the police.
He said the strong room vault was blown off by the thieves using explosives.
Mr Chilufya said no arrests had been made yet while police had launched investigations.
Meanwhile, suspended Kitwe mayor Kelvin Sinyangwe has been arrested and detained at Kamfinsa State Prison after the Kitwe High Court issued a warrant of arrest over another case involving land.
Late last month, Mr Sinyangwe was arrested by police and is currently appearing in court over two counts of obtaining money by false pretences amounting to K116,000 involving an illegal land sale.
Police in the early hours of yesterday stormed Mr Sinyangwe’s house in Zamtan area and ordered him to accompany them to Kitwe Central Police Station where he was briefly detained before he was transferred and handed over to the Kamfinsa Prison officer-in-charge.
Copperbelt Commissioner of Police Charity Katanga, who confirmed the development yesterday, said according to the order issued by the court, the former civic leader was supposed to be detained for two weeks.
Ms Katanga said the warrant was issued by Kitwe High Court-in-Charge, Judge Catherine Makungu and was expected to be implemented on April 6, 2016.
