THE Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has distributed about 3, 194 tonnes of maize to hunger-stricken areas in Eastern Province this year.
DMMU regional coordinator, Ingribet Bondo told Breeze News monitored in Chipata on Thursday that Petauke District had received 500 tonnes of maize while Katete received 413 tonnes.
Nyimba District received 410 tonnes, Sinda got 386 tonnes while Chipata received 372 tonnes of maize.
He added that Mambwe District was given 367 tonnes with another 250 tonnes currently being distributed in the same district.
Mr Bondo said Vubwi District had received 260 tonnes while Lundazi received 250 tonnes while, Chadiza received 186 tonnes.
He said the exercise was ongoing because the vulnerability assessment committee from Lusaka had already conducted an assessment and were yet to give their findings on how many people would be affected by hunger this year so that the department could help them.
Mr Bondo said Government was ready to assist people that would be affected by hunger and that DMMU was working with the Ministry of Agriculture and non-governmental organisations in assisting the affected people.
