By MARTIN NYIRENDA –
A TRADITIONAL leader has advised the electorate to be wary of some politicians contesting the upcoming August 11, elections.
Chief Liteta of Chibombo District said there was need to scrutinise aspiring candidates because some politicians were contesting the elections for personal gain which was detrimental to prospects of fostering national development beneficial to all Zambians.
The chief said in an interview in Keembe that it had become evident that some political charlatans were in politics to deprive Zambians and loot the limited resources meant to develop the country.
“Some of the politicians once elected always abandon what they pledge to do to develop their constituencies and also fail to improve the welfare of the people who voted for them which is unfortunate.
“The people should be careful and thoroughly scrutinise those contesting elections and promising what they cannot deliver to improve the welfare of the people,” he said.
Chief Liteta urged the various political leaders to ensure violent-free campaigns leading to the August elections, adding that the volatile political climate was more prevalent in urban centres.
He said political violence has all the ingredients to scare away foreign investors who had the potential to compliment Government and the private sector to stir development for the benefit of the country.
The chief equally endorsed President Edgar Lungu’s reminder that a fresh vow be embraced by Zambians to censure political violence as August 11, draws near.
He said foreign investors were key players in driving the development agenda of the country even through attracting capital inflows.
The chief also bemoaned lack of development particularly in rural areas which have been neglected for decades since the country attained independence.
He pointed out that the Old Mumbwa Road had been neglected and this was affecting agriculture production in settlements dotted along the road, part of which has been reduced to protruding stone-marred gravel.
