By HOPE BWALYA –
THE United National Independence Party (UNIP) has denounced violence perpetuated by some politicians and has urged Zambians to uphold peace and have a prayerful attitude ahead of the August 11 polls so as to ensure unity.
UNIP presidential aspiring candidate Tilyenji Kaunda said it was important for the country to guard the peace Zambia had enjoyed because sustainable development depended on it.
Mr Kaunda was speaking on the Boiling Point radio programme on Roots FM Radio in Lusaka yesterday.
“We must maintain our ‘One Zambia One Nation’. We must avoid this political violence. We must be prayerful, we want all of us to be living after August 11. Let us vote freely and let us vote wisely. If you vote wrongly you and your family will suffer,” he said.
Mr Kaunda said people should always remember that they would be held accountable by God over their actions, so it was important to avoid violence.
He urged the public to vote for him and his party, saying it was a party that put service to the people as its first priority.
Mr Kaunda said his party’s purpose was to empower the public economically and socially and not to enrich itself as this was a sin.
He said people should consider UNIP’s history as it was able to empower the people economically through projects like the creation of the Kafue Gorge to tackle the energy needs of the country.
Mr Kaunda said if voted for, UNIP would ensure that such strategic projects were introduced so as to address the future needs of the people.
